Standing 52 meters high—equivalent to a three-story building—its impressive scale makes it a striking natural wonder that captures the essence of the Arabian landscape.
Attraction: Dadan Site
The Dadan Site was once the capital of the Dadanite and Lihyanite kingdoms. This ancient city is spread across rocky peaks and an oasis that spans the valley, with its history dating back to the late 9th to early 8th century BCE (Dadanite Kingdom) and the 5th to 2nd century BCE (Lihyanite Kingdom). Thanks to the prosperity from frankincense trade, Dadan became one of the most developed cities in northern Arabia during the first millennium BCE. On the eastern red rock cliffs of the Dadan Site stand several exquisitely crafted ancient tombs. From a distance, these tombs appear as a black matrix, but up close, their fine craftsmanship becomes evident. The most famous is the Lion Tomb, symbolizing power and protection, possibly the resting place of prominent nobles or royal members. How these tombs, which rise 50 meters above the ground, were sculpted without modern construction equipment remains a mystery, similar to the enigma of the Egyptian pyramids.
Attraction: Hegra Archaeological Site
Hegra, located in the vast golden desert, features 110 well-preserved ancient tombs. These tombs not only showcase the architectural artistry and cultural background of ancient civilizations but also provide visitors with a profound historical experience. Immersing yourself in this historic site, you will feel the grandeur and mystery of ancient societies.
As Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hegra is the largest preserved Nabataean site south of Petra.
